Santa Fe, NM – Alkemē at Open Kitchen is thrilled to announce that Executive Chef Erica Tai has been honored with the prestigious Edible Local Hero Award for Chef in Santa Fe. This esteemed recognition celebrates Chef Erica’s dedication to championing farm-fresh, locally produced food in New Mexico. The Edible Local Hero Awards are especially meaningful as they are the “people’s choice” awards, nominated and voted on by the readers of Edible New Mexico.
“We are immensely proud of Chef Erica Tai for receiving the Edible Local Hero Award,” said Hue Chan Karels, Chef-Owner of Alkemē and Open Kitchen. “Championing Erica’s journey has been an incredible honor. She is one of the best talents in the culinary scene, and it’s rewarding for Open Kitchen and now Alkemē, to nurture Chef Erica Tai’s culinary journey as we create magic together.”
Originally from Taiwan, Chef Erica’s culinary passion and commitment are deeply influenced by her rich cultural heritage and the diverse culinary landscapes she has experienced. Her journey has taken her from Taiwan to Hawaii and now to New Mexico, where she has made a significant impact on the local food community.
“Receiving this award is a profound honor,” said Chef Erica Tai. “It reflects the community’s appreciation for Alkemē’s commitment to local and sustainable food practices while also embracing cultural and heritage cuisines. I am grateful to Edible New Mexico’s readers and proud to be part of such a vibrant culinary community.”
In addition to her culinary achievements, Chef Erica is also a licensed Registered Dietitian, a credential she obtained in 2020. She is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Nutrition at the University of New Mexico, further enhancing her expertise in creating meals that are not only delicious but also nutritionally balanced. This unique combination of culinary artistry and nutritional knowledge sets her apart as a leader in the field.
This accolade comes on the heels of Alkemē’s nomination for the James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant in 2024, a national recognition that underscores the restaurant’s commitment to excellence in the culinary arts. Chef Erica’s award is a testament to the talent and dedication that define Alkemē and Open Kitchen.
The Edible Local Hero Awards highlight the significant efforts of individuals and businesses in New Mexico who are dedicated to fostering a sustainable and vibrant local food economy.
